The church of San Domenico “sanctuary of the Crucifix”

On a small island north of the city of Chioggia, fifty meters from the bridge of Vigo, connected by a small bridge, stands majestic the church of San Domenico “sanctuary of the Crucifix”. Built by the Dominicans in the 13th century and later handed over to the Jesuits. For form, structure and works of art, it is a fundamental stop for those who are going to visit the art city of Chioggia. Arrived above the bridge of San Domenico, you can see on the left the former Dominican convent, and raising your gaze upwards you can see the bell tower "Romanesque style building dates back to 1300; looking now at right of the church the former lazzaretto. Upon entering the church you will notice the structure with a single nave with vaulted ceiling, presbytery and side chapels. Radically modified between 1745 and 1762 and restored in the '800.

The Church houses works of great value, you can admire at the entrance:

the Oration in the garden of Alvise dal Friso
The Battle against the Albigesi by Pietro Damini
The Crucifix that speaks to St. Thomas Aquinas by Tintoretto.
The most important work present in this church is the St. Paul stigmatized by Vittore Carpaccio, the last work signed by the painter. In the lower left portion a folded letter “Cartiglio” you can see the signature and dating of the painting (1520).
